Last week happened the first stage of the Latin America ICPC, a programming competition for university students across Latin America, with 726 teams from 181 brazillian universities participating. For the fifth year, my problem was selected to be a part of the contest, and I participated as a problem setter, helping prepare mine and the other problems for the competition. You can read more details about the last competition here: https://lnkd.in/gntSwq4x.And you can see the list with all problems I have written in the past here: https://lnkd.in/gWXqWHJ4.

On the fourth day of Wicked Problems, we’re featuring Tech-Enabled Learning. At WGU Labs, we’ve been tracking student and faculty perspectives on the transition to an increasingly tech-enabled higher education system for the last three years, and one message has been clear and consistent: Most expect higher education to be more online and tech-enabled in the future. But several key challenges, including ensuring equitable access to new technologies, improving the quality of online learning, and reducing tech fatigue, must be addressed to provide effective learning experiences for all students. Learn more about this problem, the solutions we’re exploring, and our predictions for the new year on the site: https://lnkd.in/gdNqa5ZF

🌟 Are you interested in conducting impactful social-science research and live in Britain’s beautiful Ocean City (Plymouth, Devon) or know of potential candidates, then please read on. This #PhD studentship from CDT SuMMeR is designed to draw on different disciplines in order to contribute to science but also to practice. Titled “CDTS308: I do like to be beside the seaside: Understanding how environmental assets influence who and how people engage with the coast and its wellbeing benefits”, this PhD will seek to understand who uses the UK coast for recreation (and who doesn't) and what features of the environment impact these experiences. 🎥 Here is a video where some of the supervisory team Kayleigh Wyles,@Nicolas Farina & Melanie Austen from University of Plymouth, Ian Baxter from Heriot-Watt University Lauren Molloy from JNCC share more insights about the projectCDTS308 https://lnkd.in/en7yfxpAFor more information about the project and details on how to apply see: https://lnkd.in/dPitHJ-5- ⏰ apply before 16 January 2024

I am very proud to announce that our article titled "Proportional Marginal Effects for Global Sensitivity Analysis" has been published in the SIAM/ASA Journal on Uncertainty Quantification. This article builds on the (amazing!) discoveries made by Margot Hérin during her end-of-studies internship at EDF R&D and is a collaborative effort with Vincent Chabridon and Bertrand Iooss.🔗Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gJtF5jgqShapley values rely on egalitarian redistribution principles, which cause a wide range of problems when quantifying the importance of inputs in black-box models, especially when input dependence is a factor. In this paper, we explore the benefits of using proportional redistribution schemes, showing that they allow the detection of spurious inputs, even when the inputs are highly correlated. This led to the development of Proportional Marginal Effects (PME), an alternative to Shapley effects for better understanding the inner workings of black-box models.Try out PME on your datasets using our implementation in the sensitivity R package: https://lnkd.in/ghu2zUsv

I just finished giving a two-day workshop to the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) interns at Mountain Lake Biological Station! Ever since I was an REU myself in 2018, I've come back each summer to teach future REUs how to give oral presentations to a scientific audience. They have to give two 15-minute talks during the program and for many of them, it's their first talk ever!In the first session we go over the strengths and limitations of the talk as a medium (contrasting with papers and posters), how to structure a talk, and how to pitch your work in a way that is broad enough for the audience without feeling like a reach. In the second session, we workshop their pitch ideas, and then dive into the nitty-gritty of using slide design to guide and engage the audience. It was a blast as always, and I can't wait to see what the REUs come up with this year!

Securing the 7th rank in the CSIR NET JRF back in December 2017 was undoubtedly a moment of pride for me. However, while many considered it to be a great achievement, I was aware that it's not that a big deal in research where your practical understanding, resilience, patience and troubleshooting backed by the theoretical knowledge matters the most. Only having the theoretical knowledge can not make anyone excel in this field. Now after coming a long way into my phd journey I realise that I was right back then about the insignificance of the rank and selection. What really matters is how much you have learned in these years of research exposure and how you translate it into something beneficial for the science and the society.
