How To Mega-Evolve Lucario In Pokémon GO
Mega Lucario is making its long-awaited debut in Pokémon GO, four years after it was first hinted at by Niantic. This powerful Fighting/Steel-type Mega Evolution will appear as a Raid Boss for a limited time. That also means you'll be able to collect Mega Energy and Mega-Evolve your own Lucario to use on your team in future Raid Battles, where it's expected to become one of the best Fighting-type and Steel-type attackers in the entire game.
The first chance you'll get to battle Mega Lucario in Pokémon GO is during the Mega Lucario Raid Day, which takes place on Saturday, July 27, 2024, from 11 AM to 5 PM in your local timezone. It will likely return during future events, but it's currently unknown when that will be. These battles are going to be some of the most difficult you'll encounter in the game, so it's important that you know Mega Lucario's weaknesses as well as the best counters to feature on your team.

Mega Lucario Weaknesses In Pokémon GO
Focus On Fighting, Fire & Ground
Mega Lucario is a Fighting/Steel-type Pokémon, which means it's weak against Fighting, Fire, and Ground-type attacks. You should focus on putting together a team of Pokémon that belong to any of these typings, but make sure they also have movesets that match. That last part is important because they'll get Same-Type Attack Boost (STAB), making them more effective in battle.
On the other hand, Mega Lucario is resistant to Bug, Dark, Dragon, Grass, Ice, Normal, Poison, Rock, and Steel-type attacks. That's a lot of resistances to watch out for. Avoid using any Pokémon or attacks that fall into those typings, as they will deal heavily reduced damage to Mega Lucario and will slow down how quickly you can defeat it in battle.
Mega Lucario Counters In Pokémon GO
Primal Groudon Is The Best Option
The best counters for Mega Lucario will be able to target its weaknesses with powerful Fast Attacks and Charged Attacks. They'll also have high CP levels and good stats, which is why you'll usually see Legendaries or Mega-Evolutions recommended for this kind of Raid Battle. You can see some of the top Mega Lucario counters in the table below:
Pokémon | Best Moveset |
---|---|
Primal Groudon | Mud Shot & Precipice Blades |
Mega Heracross | Counter & Close Combat |
Mega Charizard (either X or Y) | Fire Spin & Blast Burn |
Reshiram | Fire Fang & Fusion Flare |
Terrakion | Double Kick & Sacred Sword |
Heatran | Fire Spin & Magma Storm |
Conkeldurr | Counter & Dynamic Punch |
Machamp | Counter & Dynamic Punch |
Darmanitan | Fire Fang & Overheat |
Chandelure | Fire Spin & Overheat |
If you don't have any of these counters, don't worry: simply look through your storage and choose the strongest Fighting, Fire, or Ground-type Pokémon that you have. Remember, they'll need to know moves that can also target Mega Lucario's weaknesses, and they'll also need to have a relatively high CP to be effective. Every Pokémon is different, but anything over 2,000 CP is usually good enough.
Shadow versions of the Pokémon listed above are typically more effective when attacking in Raid Battles, so use those if you have them. But considering how difficult they are to obtain, the regular versions will do the job just fine.
How To Mega-Evolve Lucario In Pokémon GO
Stock Up On Mega Energy
Before you can Mega-Evolve your own Lucario, you'll need to collect enough Mega Lucario Energy. The main way to earn this is by defeating Mega Lucario in Raid Battles, after which you'll be rewarded with a small amount of this important resource. Keep doing this until you have enough to initiate the Mega-Evolution process from Lucario's information page.
The faster you defeat a Mega Lucario, the more Mega Energy you'll earn as a reward, which is why it's so important to have the best counters on your team. It's also a good idea to gather as many Trainers as possible to complete the Raid Battle, as you'll get through it much faster that way.
When you Mega-Evolve a Pokémon in Pokémon GO, it will remain in that form for eight hours, after which it will revert to its non-Mega form. There's a cooldown period that can last up to seven days, after which you'll be able to Mega-Evolve that Pokemon again for free. If you'd like to initiate the Mega-Evolution process before this cooldown period is over, you can spend a small amount of Mega Energy to do so.
